After completing the O*NET Interest Profiler, my highest score was in the Artistic category, followed by Social and Enterprising. I was not surprised by this result because I have always been drawn to creative work, expression, and communication. Based on my results, I explored five careers: Art Directors, Technical Writers, Graphic Designers, Producers and Directors, and Instructional Coordinators. All of these careers connect creativity, communication, and leadership in various ways.
Top Three Technology Skills
One major technology skill required across these careers is being comfortable with digital tools and creative software. For example, Graphic Designers and Art Directors use programs like Adobe Creative Suite to create visual content. Producers and Directors use editing software and media production tools. Technology is central to how creative ideas are brought to life today.
Another important technology skill is using content management systems and publishing platforms. Technical Writers and Instructional Coordinators often work with digital systems to organize information, create documents, and distribute learning materials. Since I am in the College of Information, this stood out to me because it connects directly to how information is structured and shared.
The third technology skill is being able to use multimedia communication tools. Whether it is video editing, presentation software, or collaboration platforms, all five careers rely on technology to communicate ideas effectively to different audiences.
Top Three Knowledge Areas
One key knowledge area across these jobs is communications and media. Every career I selected involves creating or delivering messages in some form, whether visually, verbally, or through written content.
Another important knowledge area is design and visual principles. Art Directors and Graphic Designers especially need to understand layout, color, and visual impact. Even Technical Writers need to understand how formatting and structure affect clarity.
The third knowledge area is education and training methods, especially for Instructional Coordinators. Understanding how people learn and process information is important when creating materials or guiding others.
Top Three Skills and Abilities
The first major skill required is creativity. All of these careers require generating ideas, thinking outside the box, and finding new ways to communicate.
The second essential skill is strong communication skills. Technical Writers must explain complex topics clearly. Producers and Directors must guide teams. Instructional Coordinators must work with educators and administrators. Communication is at the center of everything.
The third important skill is critical thinking and problem-solving. These careers require analyzing information, making adjustments, and improving creative work based on feedback.
Expert Mentor
An expert I chose who works in one of my potential career areas is Dr. Rodney D. Nielsen from the College of Information at UNT. His research focuses on artificial intelligence and natural language processing, which connects technology, language, and communication.
I chose Dr. Nielsen because his work shows how technology and creativity can intersect. As someone studying in the College of Information, I am interested in how digital systems shape communication. AI is rapidly advancing and will continue to impact our future work lives. I also find it interesting how AI challenges authenticity, creativity, and critical thinking. His work demonstrates that even as technology evolves, human creativity and thoughtful communication still matter.
In summary, Dr. Nielsen’s research focuses on improving how computers understand and process human language. His work contributes to developing smarter systems for communication and learning. This connects to careers like Technical Writer and Instructional Coordinator, where technology and communication overlap.
Reflection
Overall, this assignment helped me better understand how my interests connect to real career paths. I value creativity, but I also care about communication and working with people. My results confirmed that I am not just interested in art for art’s sake, but in using creativity to inform, guide, and impact others. Seeing how technology plays a role in these careers also made me reflect on how important it is to stay adaptable in a changing digital world.
